Gun sales are again on the rise all around America and in Central Pennsylvania. But why are people stocking up?
We are coming off a Black Friday that saw record gun sales. It’s been reported the FBI center that does the firearm background checks crashed twice on that day. So gun sales are soaring in America and the reason is a matter of opinion.
“Losing what you already have gets in people’s minds I believe,” explained Doug Williams of Kinsey’s Outdoors. “And they want some way to protect it.”
Williams is a manager at Kinsey’s Outdoors in Mount Joy. He says in the past year gun sales have increased 20%. And there are many reasons why, such as the re-election of President Obama, who said in a debate he favors an assault weapons ban.
“There is some fear of not being able to get certain things in the near future so people want to acquire it now while they still can,” Williams believes.
Another reason is that the popularity of shooting sports has increased. Along with that is the number of women who are arming themselves. But some have a different idea.
“I think with the downturn in the economy and the crime rate going up, people are getting scared and more people are worried about their safety,” commented gun owner Howard VanKeren. “So they’re buying a lot for home defense.”
Still, others believe it has to do with a current treaty being proposed by the United Nations. It’s called the Small Arms Treaty and many fear it has the potential to disarm the American public.
“I have heard some talk about that. Everything is fueling it. Anything that talks about taking away people’s gun rights fuels the fire,” Doug Williams told us.
As far as the UN Small Arms Treaty, the Senate would have to ratify it to make it law, which is a long shot. But many gun owners are still worried.
