Pennsylvania’s Teacher of the Year was announced Tuesday, and among the 12 finalists, three are from our area.
The Teacher of the Year is quite an honor, comparing to the red carpet at the Emmy’s and the Golden Globes of Education.
Among the 12 finalists for the Keystone Awards of Excellence Teacher of the Year were second grade teacher Janette Showalter of Northern Lebanon School District, language arts teacher Denise Williams also of Northern Lebanon School District and art teacher Michael Miller of Wyomissing Area School District in Berks County.
Prior to the teacher of the award announcement, each teacher was introduced by a student, who spoke of their teacher’s dedication and passion. Many spoke of how each teacher has the ability to make learning fun.
“He would make us dress up and act out plays and never afraid to laugh at himself,” explained Steven Spirk of Brockway Area School District when talking about his teacher.
“To her I'm not just a student, I am an unique individual,” introduced Millcreek Township School District Meghan Good while introducing her teacher.
Each teacher carries pride in education and in their students, but only one could be named teacher of the year.
“Today I am proud to announce the 2013 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year, Ryan Devlin,” explained the emcee.
Honored and humbled, Devlin spoke about how privileged he is to teach the next generation.
“Right now there is a student very determined to find a cure for cancer and there's a student finishing up kickball who will be the future president United States,” Teacher of the Year Ryan Devlin told us.
Devlin said that while teaching is an important job, the number one job was done by his parents and he honored and thanked them for giving him the ability to get a job he loves.
