The Pennsylvania State Association for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance named CV High School health and physical education teacher Annette Fecera its 2012 “Health Teacher of the Year.” Fecera accepted the award at the association’s annual state convention last week in Seven Springs.

“My emotions are very difficult to put into words,” Facera said. “There are so many quality health teachers across the state, so I was completely shocked when I learned that I was receiving this award.”

Fecera came to CV nine years ago after receiving her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and master’s degree in school health from West Chester University. She has written curriculum and developed courses at CVHS, where she introduced an elective called Health Seminar for seniors who are considering careers in the health/medical field. She also created a cyber course for students taking health class during summer school.

Outside the classroom, Fecera has served on various district committees tackling issues from technology to new teacher inductions to student drug testing.

Fecera presents at numerous workshops and conferences throughout the state on topics such as Media & Adolescents, the Understanding by Design process and Current Trends in Fitness, and she has spoken numerous times on innovative assessment strategies for health and other classrooms. She is currently enrolled in the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program at Immaculata University.

“It is great to work in a school district that truly values and supports health and physical education,” Fecera said. “Our department is dedicated to giving students the skills to live a healthy lifestyle, because a child’s health impacts all parts of his or her life, especially academics.”
