Two people were killed and another was wounded when a gunman opened fire in a mall in Portland, Ore., before the gunman was also killed.
Clackamas County, Ore., Sheriff’s Office Lt. James Rhodes said at a news conference Tuesday night that at least two people were killed in the shooting at the Clackamas Town Center Mall, which happened in an area filled with holiday shoppers.
The gunman was also killed. Authorities would not confirm reports that he turned the gun on himself.
One person was also critically injured and hospitalized with traumatic injuries, Rhodes said.
By 8 p.m. Eastern Time, the scene at the mall was no longer active, Rhodes told CBS affiliate KOIN-TV, Portland.
The Oregonian newspaper reported that the shooting occurred near a Macy’s store, and that the gunman might have been carrying an AR-15 rifle. The newspaper reported two people had been killed.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the mall, which was evacuated and placed on lockdown, KOIN reported.
“At first no one really knew what was going down,” Mario, a kiosk worker inside the mall, told KOIN. “We heard six shots at first, and then people scattered like crazy, everybody left.”
As of 8:45 p.m. Eastern Time, SWAT teams were still working to get everyone out of the mall, Rhodes said.
