The Mayor of Harrisburg is calling on President Obama and Congress to help her put a stop to the gun violence in the city.
Monday morning, we were at a press conference with the coroner about a man who was shot in the chest and killed. Then hours later, the standoff started.
Mayor Linda Thompson says she's had it and has already started working to change things.
“We are asking the president and the 113th Congress to be prepared to pass common sense, fair legislation to reduce gun violence,” cited Mayor Linda Thompson.
Harrisburg Mayor Thompson is taking action so standoffs like the one we saw Monday night don't happen again. But she needs your help.
“It really is about getting the public informed and getting them involved, writing their Congressman, lobbying with mayors and helping to put pressure on Congress to get measures finally implemented,” explained Thompson.
Thompson wants to close the gun sale loopholes, and make gun trafficking a felony.
She's calling on the president to confirm a new Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) Director and wants tougher laws to prosecute those who fail gun background checks.
In addition, she's asking Obama to lift the gag order that keeps you in the dark about gun traffickers.
Closer to home, Harrisburg's Mayor is working with the executive director of the housing authority to weed out criminals that are hiding out in the city.
Police say that's what Abel Roman was doing at Hall Manor until police finally tracked him down.
“We want people to have their privacy, but we're living in a society where these young women are harboring known criminals, known drug dealers, known gun traffickers,” Thompson stated.
Mayor Thompson says some evictions have already happened as a result of her partnership with the housing authority.
