The U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force has been looking for Abel Roman since he shot someone in Philadelphia back in August.
CBS 21 News spoke with U.S. Marshals about how they were able to track him down and the important decision they made that helped save lives.
A U.S. Marshal tells us that usually the Fugitive Task Force takes care of business on their own. But this time, before they did anything on scene, they called in the CERT or SWAT team and that, he says, was the best decision they could have made.
U.S. Marshals say they'd been looking for 24-year-old Abel Roman since August. He was wanted for allegedly shooting a 23-year-old man in the chest while driving on the same block in Philadelphia. They also wanted him for violating probation.
Recently, the U.S. Marshal Fugitive Task Force received a tip that he was hiding out at the Hall Manor community in Harrisburg. So they went looking for him there Monday afternoon.
After taking a hard look at the layout of the complex and considering Roman's violent past, the Marshals decided it wasn't safe to go it alone.
They called in the Dauphin County CERT Team, which took over the operation.
After more than eight hours of shooting back and forth, tear gas, negotiators and robots, things got quiet. The coroner says Roman shot and killed himself.
Martin Pane, of the U.S. Marshal’s for Middle District of PA, says "we're very thankful that a very dangerous individual was taken off the streets. This man had a violent past, was wanted for a violent crime and that is what the Fugitive Task Force is about, getting the worst of the worst off the street.”
U.S. Marshal Pane tells us he is very thankful no one was seriously hurt.
