The cycle continues as another violent death is followed with a prayer vigil.
That is what happened Tuesday night at Sixth and McClay in Harrisburg, only a block away from the 11th murder of the year last Saturday.
December has been a tough month for Harrisburg, as this was the third prayer vigil in less than two weeks.
One was held last Friday for Marcus Garner, a father of four who was shot to death. Tuesday night's vigil is for Dion Britton, who was killed only a block away on Fifth Street last Saturday night, becoming the city's 11th murder victim of the year.
“This is a wake up call, we can do better than this,” commented Bishop Jeremiah Park of the Susquehanna Regional Conference of the United Methodist Church, which serves the Harrisburg area.
Until September, Bishop Park was the Methodist Bishop for the area that included Newtown, CT.
Heading's God Call is the group that sponsors these all too frequent events.
“Our God is a loving God, but with all the violence the heart of God is broken,” stated Heeding God’s Call organizer Rev. Ron Tilley.
Tuesday night, a group of about two dozen gathered to bless those that have been so brutally taken and to pray that we can stop the need for these all too frequent vigils here in Harrisburg.
Of course we don't know if it will help, but we do know with the community coming together it certainly can't hurt.
