Cumberland Valley School District is the latest school district in the area to become aware of rumors of potential gun violence on Friday.

The school says that the safety of students, staff and visitors in their number one priority.

The rumor first surfaced during the school day Thursday.

Silver Spring Township Police Department are aware of the incident and working with the school as they conduct an in-depth investigation.

The full statement from the school is listed below:

"Safety of our students, staff, and visitors is our number one priority. This message is to make you aware that the district is investigating rumors of potential violence tomorrow at Cumberland Valley High School. A rumor surfaced on Thursday, Dec. 20, and indicated that someone is planning to bring a gun to school on Friday, Dec. 21. Similar rumors have surfaced in neighboring districts.

Silver Spring Police Department has been made aware of the incident and are supporting us as we conduct an in-depth investigation, which includes interviews to track the origin of the rumor. We are confident that this rumor is not based on an actual threat and that students and staff should feel safe being in our school building.

As a precaution, Silver Spring Police are providing an added presence on our campus and in our High School today and tomorrow. Additionally, as is standard procedure, all exterior doors will remain locked throughout the school day; visitors must enter the school through a main entrance and all staff/visitors must wear a district-issued identification badge.

We acknowledge, in light of recent incidents including last week’s shooting in Connecticut, similar rumors in neighboring schools, and even the Mayan prediction, that these are unique and challenging times. We all play a vital role in any school-wide safety effort; it is the duty and responsibility of students and staff to report a threat to the proper individuals. We appreciate the concern and help of students and staff who have taken this responsibility seriously by reporting their concerns to the principals.

Thank you for your continued support as we move through this time of heightened concern for school safety. Rest assured, it is always our first priority, today and always."
