The Broad Street Market in Harrisburg will remain closed this weekend after the city shut it down for failing inspections.
Workers spent the day dealing with building maintenance and pests.
The sign that greeted customers as they tried to eat lunch here at the Broad Street Market said one word, closed.
“Oh my gosh unbelievable,” exclained Nadine Grahm. “It's a total disaster as you can see for the vendor, but it is necessary.”
Nadine Grahm is the owner of Porter’s House Authentic Jamaican food located inside the Broad Street Market in Harrisburg.
The market was shut down by code enforcement on Thursday, stating the building failed two inspections.
So instead of serving customers at lunch Friday, Nadine's staff spent the time cleaning.
However, the city acknowledges the shut down has nothing to do with the vendors like Nadine.
“I'd like to make it clear, it's the historic building and not a vending issue,” stated City Spokesperson Bob Philbin. “Not the food. Once the building is cleaned it will be back to normal.”
The building is owned by the city but run by a non-profit board.
“We are acknowledging the problem, we are apologizing for the problem and we are recognizing the problem,” stated Broad Street Market board member Bret Keisling.
Broad Street Market board member Bret Keisling says the board is working hard to get the market back open by Wednesday.
“We are spending two days fumigating and using a professional pest control company and hope to be open Wed. morning,” Keisling stated.
A situation that doesn't make vendors like Nadine too happy. “This is one of the busiest days, Friday and Saturday,” she told us. “But if it's in the best interest of us and the customers, then that's what we need to do.”
We are told the city will be inspecting again on Monday and Tuesday and as long as those inspections go well, the market could be back open Wednesday morning.
