How do police go about investigating missing persons cases

Since Kortne Stouffer went missing three weeks ago a lot our viewers have asked us the question as to when can police start looking for a missing person and how do they go about it?

We touched base with State Police who this year handled 100 missing persons cases.

It is a case-by-case basis as to how they handle each one and there are different types of missing person reports that they take.

They take reports for people who could be posing a danger to themselves or others, the disabled or elderly who might suffer from dementia. They also could deal with someone who fits the criteria of potentially abducted or kidnapped and juvenile runaways.

First, police obtain a detailed description of the person and gather information about where they could be, who their friends or acquaintances are that they may be with.

If they are not located in a short time period, police can enter the person into a statewide computer database or the CLEAN system, which is linked to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer system.

That means across the country other law enforcement would have access to a missing persons case. Each missing persons case is different.

Other agencies like the Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center, FBI and other law enforcement the assistance of federal law enforcement.
