While gas prices around the country and right here in Central Pennsylvania are high, local gas stations are looking for ways to save you money.
Gas prices are 18 cents higher right now than the same time last year, but local gas stations are offering rewards cards so that you can save money while filling up your gas tank.
Gas stations. Many people dread driving up to the tank and handing over money in exchange for fuel, but in order to drive, you need gas.
"It's hard, you know what I mean?” stated Helen Jones. “Because we need our cars to go to our jobs, to our businesses, to get our kids to school. We need gas, it's a necessity."
"What else are you gonna do, walk? That's the bottom line, you gotta get where you gotta get," added Lee Nolt.
Gas stations are now offering rewards to help you save at the pump. Giant offers you 10 cents off every gallon for every $100 you spend on groceries, while other stations have other programs.
"Turkey Hill and Sunoco, you can save five dollars off," cited one person.
At Sunoco you can save on gas by purchasing items in the convenience store, which is nice when you have to commute every day.
"I commute from Carlisle to work everyday so I'm spending like sixty dollars, seventy dollars a week," commented Jaime Gibson.
At Sunoco, if you buy a coffee for example, you can save 3 cents per gallon, and if you buy it every day, it can add up.
Gas station workers say that some people plan it out, getting their groceries and daily coffees at the station.
Some have it down to a science, saving so much that they pay less than a dollar to fill up their entire tank.
The best part about these programs is that you don't even need to sign up for anything, it's as simple as grabbing a card and swiping it every time you buy something.
Other ways to save gas can be as simple as removing any unneeded weight, using cruise control, or even checking your tire pressure, your spark plug and your air filter.
The easiest way to save the most money on gas is simply to drive safe. When you drive above 50 miles per hour, your gas mileage goes down. Accelerating slowly and not overusing your brakes can result in extra money in your pocket.
