Information provided by Central PA Food Bank:
The white marble of the state Capitol Building will be cast in an orange glow during September evenings, as the Corbett administration switches out the spotlights that shine outside the Lieutenant Governor’s Office balcony to signal the start of “Hunger Action Month.”
The orange lights, visible on the Capitol’s Third Street facade, will turn on at dusk Saturday, Sept. 1.
“Hunger Action Month” is recognized nationally by Feeding America as a way to urge individuals to take action in their communities to help those in need. Feeding America is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, working through a nationwide network of member food banks, including many Hunger-Free Pennsylvania affiliates.
Pennsylvania has seen a dramatic spike in the number of families seeking food assistance. More than 1.36 million residents are now eligible for food flowing through the State Food Purchase Program, one of the state’s most important tools in the fight against hunger.
The General Assembly’s joint bipartisan Legislative Hunger Caucus, co-chaired by Sen. Mike Brubaker, R-Lancaster, and Rep. John Myers, D-Philadelphia, will mark “Hunger Action Month” in Pennsylvania with a legislative food drive to collect donations of non-perishable items from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24 in the East Wing Rotunda.
In addition, Hunger-Free Pennsylvania has launched a month-long Facebook campaign during September to provide daily updates, facts and figures, and ways for individuals to help address hunger issues. The site can be found at http://www.facebook.com/HungerFreePA.
Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, http://www.hungerfreepa.org, comprises a network of food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, charities and other hunger relief organizations working together to end hunger in Pennsylvania. The network has 21 members serving all 67 counties.
