Shippensburg students say ordinance to limit parties won't fly

Shippensburg Township and University leaders are reminding students who live in the township about the party laws which took effect last year.
But some students tell CBS 21 News they won't fly.

Students we spoke with say they know about these rules, and it's not that they don't care, but they say they're college students and they can't be expected to follow these rules.

Richard Avenue in Shippensburg Township is lined with homes where college students study, sleep and play.

Friday nights, some hang out on porches and stay out late, something the township wants to change.

"I think that a couple years ago people got too rowdy at a party and they're probably just done with it," explained Shippensburg University junior Carly Ruberta.

When standing in Shippensburg Borough, the rules are different from in Shippensburg Township, where the rules apply. To clear up any confusion, officials handed out flyers.

The flyers say you can't party past 11 and if you have more than 20 people over for a party, you need a permit, unless they're all family members.

People who live on Richard Street, mostly Shippensburg students, say these rules just won't fly.

"They should know that they're setting us up for failure," stated one student.

"I don't think they'll be able to enforce everyone as much as they would like to,” added junior Bridget Kearney. “I think they can definitely come around and make their presence known, but I think it's really not going to affect how things run."

There's also a noise ordinance in the township. If you're caught breaking both noise and party rules, you could be fined up to $1,000.
