The Carnival Cruise Ship Triumph is just hours away from finally docking in Mobile, Alabama, but the memories of this nightmare trip will live with the passengers forever.

CBS 21 spoke to a family who experience a cruise ship disaster, and say they’ll never go on a cruise again.

Robert Mauri and his wife Megan were on the Costa Concordia Cruise ship that crashed off the coast of Italy a year ago. “When I saw this happened again, it kind of brought us back to the situation about being stranded in a place where you don’t have very much control. And it’s unfortunate that plans and things aren’t being done when things like this happen.”

The couple was on their honeymoon when the cruise ship crashed.  Robert said no one saw it coming. “We were in the dining room, just got our appetizers, then all of the sudden there was a rumble in the room.”

That rumble was their ship – the Costa Concordia, hitting land in Italy. The ship sunk and at least 30 people died.

Many people blame the cruise ship for not being ready for a potential disaster.

“You’re going on your vacation and you’re thinking everything’s taken care of, and they’re not." Megan explained. "They have no clue what they’re doing.”

More than one year later, the Carnival Cruise Ship Triumph didn’t crash, but a fire in the engine room left the ship powerless Sunday.  Now four days later, the ship is finally making it back to Mobile, Alabama.

“Whether your ship sinks or it’s disabled, it’s a very uneasy situation and I know sometimes they try and do their best, but I think in this instance for them, Carnival could have done a lot more.”  Robert said.

Those aboard the cruise ship say the conditions are a nightmare. They’re living in filth and they have very little to eat. Many are forced to stay on the deck of the boat because it’s too hot in their rooms and there is no air conditioning.

The couple says the passengers on the Triumph will never forget this.  “They’re going to remember this for the rest of their lives and that’s one thing I can tell anyone now who’s listening. You’re never going to forget this moment.”

The cruise ship company offered the Mauri family just enough money to pay for their trip, after having to replace all of their belongings, and they say Carnival should do more.

At this moment, those aboard Triumph are being offered a full refund, hotel rooms, plane tickets, 500-dollars, and a voucher for their next cruise.

Megan said, if they would have been offered a voucher for another cruise, they wouldn't have used it.  “To go on a cruise ship again, I think would be extremely difficult for somebody to even have to step foot on something that caused the change for the rest of their life.”

Those people who reschedule their trips will be in contact with travel agencies,  but many other people may decide to take a vacation where they can’t be stranded in the ocean, just to be safe.
