This Valentine's Day, a 12-year-old girl from York County is giving a big gift.
She's shaving her head for cancer and raising hundreds of dollars for Saint Jude's Hospital.
At Salon Blu in Springettsbury Township, there's a lot of hair cutting and coloring going on, but this client's visit is a bit different. 12-year-old Sophia Juliano is chopping it all off.
“She said, what do you think about me doing that?” her mother, Mindy Juliano told us. “And I said, I think my heart will burst out of my chest.”
“I'm really anxious, freaked out, but I'm really excited at the same time,” Sophia Juliano continued.
Sophia's inspiration to shave her head, donate her hair and raise money for St. Jude's Hospital, was a special friend.
“The girl in our church got cancer,” Sophia told us. “She had cancer and I felt really bad and then it stopped and she got it again, so that really made me want to do it.”
Surrounded by her sisters and very proud parents, Roger puts Sophia in the chair and starts working.
First he ties her hair, then cuts it, saving it for the Locks of Love. Then the clippers come out.
As he works on Sophia's locks, what Roger Schuler is doing, cuts deep into his emotions. That's because he's been cancer free for six years.
“I think it's unbelievable,” commented Schuler. “I think with little girls as attached as they are to their hair and the looks at that age, for someone to throw it all to whim for a good cause is amazing.”
“I don't really care what anyone says,” Sophia commented. “I'm doing it for a cause and want to make other people happy.”
A new look. A bag full of hair to donate, and a heart as big as her smile.
Sophia was able to reach her goal and raised $1500 for St. Jude's Hospital.
