The 2012 edition of the York Fair is over and clean up operations are underway. This process usually takes nearly two weeks; however with a large event occurring later in the month that time has reduced to one week. Very few attendees have any idea of the size and scope of what it takes to clean America's Oldest Fair®. Ron Lighty, York Fair Facilities Superintendent provided these statistics from the 2012 clean-up operation...
9 - full-time staff that assisted in the clean-up.
17 - part-time staff that assisted in the clean-up.
40 - temporary staff brought in.
85 - acres involved in the clean-up operation.
17 - buildings that are affected by the clean-up process.
205,545 - total sq. feet of the seven major exhibit areas that have to be cleaned.
60 - total number of volunteer hours for the clean-up operation.
6 - number of Red Lion teenagers (via Lincoln Intermediate Unit) that assisted in the clean-up operations.
1 - number of weeks to completely clean the entire grounds and buildings.
256 - labor hours to clean out the Toyota Arena livestock area.
5 - Back pack blowers
3 - Sweeper/scrubbers
2 - Bucket tractors
1 - Power Vacuum
700 - number of trash totes that were emptied.
18 - large trash containers that were emptied.
45 - tons of garbage removed.
1st building to building to be cleaned: Memorial Hall - due to public trade show starting Wednesday. (Large scale east coast train show)
51 - weeks until the 2012 York Fair!
Note: Contractors, L.T. Godfrey and Rodney and Robert Smyser were used to power sweep, load and haul straw, bedding and manure from the Toyota Arena, horse barns and the Farm Animal Learning Center. York Waste emptied all totes, compactors and large front load containers.
“Toyota Arena activity is growing, with the expanded Animal Birthing Center and extra animal stalls," said Lighty. There's also a double turnover in that facility with Dairy cows and sheep coming out Monday evening and Beef cows, swine and goats arriving for showing Tuesday morning. This adds to the demands of Lighty's staff along with a double turnover in the horse barns with Harness Racing in the early part of the fair followed by Heavy Horse Hitch program during the final weekend each year.
"It's an amazing thing to see on Sunday evening", said Lighty. He continued, "I'm impressed to see how quick it gets done. It takes a lot of effort on everyone's part. They do an excellent job."
Typically Lighty and his crew have two weeks to turn the entire site around; however the new four day White Rose Thunder motorcycle show scheduled the end of the month will cut clean-up time in half. "We'll be ready," said Lighty.
