Parents concerned over the safety of children at local elementary school

Southern York County School District board members say one of their elementary schools is safe for students.

We are talking about Friendship Elementary School in Glen Rock.

Earlier this month, several students fell ill after a malfunctioning hot water heater in the boiler room resulted in abnormally high levels of carbon monoxide.

Thursday night, a concerned parent spoke up during a school board meeting about a radon problem.

The board responded by saying that although levels were slightly higher, they were still within safe limits and that the school is safe.

"In my opinion, radon is still an issue,” stated concerned parent Jenny Smith. “They have areas that they tested and they've put in mitigation systems, but what about the rest of the school? They should monitor that constantly, constantly."

Carbon monoxide detectors are being installed at the school.
