Three Mile Island Unit 1 is back in service as of 9:12 Saturday morning. It returned to service when operators connected the plant's turbine generator to the regional power grid.
Unit 1 automatically shut down on Thursday, September 20 due to an unexpected actuation of a relay switch on a reactor coolant pump. Workers at the plant replaced the relay switch and also installed more monitoring capabilities before restarting the plant.
TMI site Vice President Rick Libra: "We performed the necessary repairs safely and efficiently and are committed to a reliable operating cycle."
The automatic shutdown of the plant happened Thursday around 2:20 p.m. There was a loud noise as steam released from the plant and undetectable amount of radiation was released. There was no health threat to the public and no need for evacuations.
