Some rowdy street racers forced police to break up a large gathering of car enthusiasts over the weekend at Park City Mall.

It’s not unusual for people to meet at Boscov’s at the Park City Mall on Sundays to show off their cars, but when police say some people got out of hand, they had to shut it down.

This is all part of a Facebook group called Sundays Boscov’s Meet. Their Facebook page has just shy of 1,800 people are members.

It’s a bunch of car enthusiast who regularly get together. The group meets from 7 to 10 on Sundays.

This past Sunday, when about 300 cars were there, members were doing burnouts in the parking lot and others were leaving the group and racing on Route 30 and 283. So police broke it up and issued citations.

But they were also interested in this group because there is often a link between vehicle theft and street racing.

“You certainly wouldn’t load your family into a mini-van and drive around a NASCAR track during a NASCAR race,” stated Lancaster Police Lieutenant Todd Umstead. “By the same token, you don’t want people racing cars on the same highways you’re trying to drive on with your family. It’s illegal and it’s very dangerous.

It’s worth noting that according to the law, you don’t have to be the driver in order to get in trouble if there’s a street race. The passenger, time keeper or even the person waving the flag can get cited, as well.
