The newest crime numbers are released and while violent crime decreased across the state, it has spiked in York County.

This data comes from a State Police report called the Uniform Crime Reporting System. It outlines reported crimes and almost every category went up in York County.

Violent crimes numbered 1,325 in 2011, an increase from just over 900 the year before in the County. Statewide in 2011, violent crimes decreased to the lowest since 2003.

There were 20 murders in 2011, up from 11. Rape, robbery and aggravated assault reports also climbed.

For some people in the county, the numbers are a wake up call.

“We live here and like number one, I didn’t even know there is so much crime in PA, especially in York, that’s pretty crazy,” commented Kariann Reynolds.

Property crimes, things like burglary, car thefts, and larceny did go down. The only category in property crimes to go up was arson, from 56 to 70.
