A Carlisle fire station and a national pizza chain are teaming up to help ensure your home is fire safe. Members of Union Fire Company are delivering Domino’s pizza Wednesday evening. The customer could end up with more than a pie.
This week is National Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters and fire safety specialists can give you a checklist of things to do to prevent fires and what to do if you find yourself in a fire.
But when it comes to personal safety at home, the smoke detector is at the top of the list.
At the Union Fire Station, new smoke detectors and nine volt batteries were in stock and ready to be installed and firefighters will trade their turnout gear for aprons.
Here's how the promotion works. If they deliver a pizza to your house, and you have a smoke detector that works, your pizza is free.
If it isn't working, they'll replace the battery. If that's not the problem, they'll install a new smoke detector.
So this begs the question as to why fire fighters are so passionate about these things?
"Recently in Dickinson Township we had a house fire,” Stephen Truesdell, Assistant Fire Chief for Union Fire Company replied. “The occupant opened the bedroom door. The smoke activated the detector on the second floor where the rest of the occupants of the house were. They were able to escape safely. Called 911 and we arrived to put out the fire."
Fire fighting is a tough job that is physically challenging. But it can take an emotional toll as well.
That toll increases when the absence of a smoke detector leads to a death or serious injury that could have been prevented with a cheap way to protect your home.
