More than two million older Pennsylvanians can begin reviewing their Medicare insurance options. With changes in coverage and pricing, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging is urging recipients to take advantage of trained volunteers across the Commonwealth.

Pennsylvania has one of the largest senior populations in the country. Within the next 10 to 20 years, a rapid growth is expected in the 60 to 70 age group. Medicare provides hospital, medical and prescription drug insurance coverage.

Open enrollment gives seniors the opportunity to review the numerous coverage and pricing options available. Realizing that many live on low or fixed incomes, the Department of Aging stresses the importance of comparative shopping for Medicare.

Assistance on what can be a very complicated matter is available at the state's Area Agencies on Aging through the department's Apprise program.

"We invite all our older Pennsylvanians to consider utilizing that resource to find out from highly-trained staff volunteers as to what the details are of all the options available and to ask all questions,” explained Department of Aging Secretary Brian Duke. “Whether it be about prescription drugs or whether it be about preventive health and wellness covered by Medicare which is very important right now to consider. They should contact the Apprise program.

Last year, the program helped 90,000 Pennsylvanians. This year the number is expected to top 100,000 people. The open enrollment period ends on Friday, December 7.
