Tim Curley and Graham Spanier are not currently working for Penn State, but they are reportedly still receiving big paychecks.
This has many people outraged. Some of the people at the center of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal are still being paid, even though they are not actively working for the university.
Spanier and Curley are the two men still being paid by Penn State. The first is former university president Graham Spanier.
Even though he was fired in November, he’s a tenured professor, which means he has special protections that keep his paychecks coming. No word on how big they are, but in 2011 Spanier made more than $700,000 with pay and benefits.
Then there’s Tim Curley the former athletic director. He went on leave right after Sandusky’s indictment, so he is still being paid. Again, no word on how much. But the current AD makes close to $400,000 according to the university’s website.
According to Penn State’s spokesman, the following statement was made: “The employment status of both men is under review, but it would not be appropriate to comment further since these are employment matters.”
As for the other big names in this scandal, former Vice President Gary Schultz retired in 2009 after nearly 40 years at the school. Then, of course, there’s Joe Paterno. When he was fired back in November, he got more than $5 million in what was called a “retirement” payout.
A hearing is scheduled in the cases of Tim Curley and Gary Schultz next Thursday is relation to their perjury charges. The two are not expected to be in court.
