Motorists traveling on Route 30should find traffic patterns back to normal in time for the Friday morning commute on the Wrights Ferry Bridge over the Susquehanna River. Construction crews this week have been removing the concrete barrier that separated the single lane of traffic on the westbound side of the bridge from the construction work. Tonight, the crews are scheduled to remove the concrete barrier on the eastbound side of the bridge that separated eastbound traffic from the other single lane of westbound traffic that has been using the project’s “express lane” on the eastbound side of the bridge.
The bridge rehabilitation project is not finished, however. Motorists are advised they may encounter single-lane traffic restrictions in one or both directions during the daytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and during the overnight hours between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. as construction crews work on bridge joints and repairs to damage to the concrete deck and eastbound parapet caused by truck crash this year and a fiery truck crash last year. If the repairs cannot be completed this fall due to cold weather, they will be completed next spring when weather conditions improve.
People can view the traffic patterns and traffic conditions on the Route 30 bridge by way of a traffic camera that was installed last year on the Lancaster County side of the Susquehanna River. To access the images from this traffic camera, go to PennDOT’s travel advisory website at www.511pa.com. Motorists can also use the website to check on travel conditions on other major expressways and interstate highways in south central Pennsylvania and statewide. In addition to the website, motorists can also check on travel conditions by way of their telephones or cell phones by calling 511. This is a free travel information service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
PennDOT has contracted with Swank Associated Companies, Inc. of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, to conduct the rehab project for the Route 30 bridge at a cost of $9,348,528. The rehab project, also referred to as a bridge preservation project, included the replacement of the metal bridge joints (called expansion dams) in the bridge deck, repairs to the structural steel that has experienced rust and deterioration, concrete deck repair, painting of some of the metal parts of the bridge, and the application of a latex modified concrete wearing surface to seal the deck from water penetration. This work should help extend the life of the bridge another 20 to 25 years. The bridge, which was built in 1972, carries more than 48,000 vehicles a day between the two counties. The project, which started early last year, was scheduled for completion in late November 2012, but the added repair work due to the damage caused by the truck crashes this year and last year may extend the completion date to spring 2013.
