Use of steroids, other supplements soaring among teens

If you want the toned look that athletes and stars have on TV, and something promises to help make that happen, let’s face it, to many people its enticing.

A new study, however, now shows the use of muscle-enhancing supplements hitting a ‘young demographic’ more than ever before.

It's not that these ads are necessarily giving the wrong message, it's that they might not be delivering the right message to teens. This study could prove it.

Survey data collected this year from about 2800 adolescents with various backgrounds shows almost 35 percent using protein powders or shakes and nearly six percent reported steroid use.

Those results are much higher than any previous studies.

That magic bullet, says local physical trainer Rich Harris, is a substitute for the time and hard work it should take to properly build up your body.

Bryan Parthemer isn't shy about his use of supplements. But to him, they're just that, supplements, not a way to bypass hard work at the gym.

Brian started lifting at 13. He says the temptation to do steroids was always there, but he chose a different route.

But not every teen will make that same decision.

That’s how one of Rich Harris' students used to obtain anabolic steroids, pretty easy access.

Harris admits future surveys could show even more teens using muscle enhancers, even though its not necessary.

You need sleep, good nutrition, and a proper workout to improve your physique, and there's no supplement for that.
