Drug dealers' goods auctioned off for a different Black Friday deal

In York County, the District Attorney held his own Black Friday event. Not a sale, but an auction.

The items at the auction aren't family heirlooms or items no one wants any more. In reality, it's a safe bet the original owners would love to have them back.

The York County Drug Task Force semi-annual auction was held Friday. Items available to the highest bidders included 60 vehicles seized during drug investigations.

Numerous other smaller items, seized and forfeited in the course of different investigations, were auctioned off including television, small electronics and tools.

While much of the interest was in the 60 cars going up on the block, one man had his eyes on the Air Jordans.

"I buy and re-sell shoes for a profit,” explained Robert Herman. “I like shoes."

"There's really any range you can pull in for sneakers,” Herman told us. “You can buy that lot for a hundred bucks and come out a thousand dollars."

It's unknown how much money was made. People who bought a car had to pay a $300 cash deposit and have a week to pay the balance to the office. State law regulates how the funds can be used.

"The proceeds of auction today will go back in to fighting the drug war," explained York County District Attorney Tom Kearney. "There is something right about seizing the assets of the drug dealers and using these assets to fight drug dealing."

One bidder summed up the total experience this way. The bad guys lose things they never should have had.

He gets something he wants at a good price, and there's more money for fighting crime.
