It started out as an ugly christmas sweater gala with wine tasting to raise money for the Middletown Library.
Instead, Saturday night, the focus will be on the kids and parents, featuring smores instead of mom and dad's favorite chardonnay.
It's been a rough year for the Middletown Public Library, learning this summer the borough was facing a financial crisis. As a result council members decided not to provide the library with the $350,000 donation in 2013 that appropriated this year.
But the elected officials and library supporters decided to hold several fundraisers.
One of them was the Ugly Christmas Sweater Gala tomorrow night from 7-11 PM at the Christmas tree at Hoffer Park. The vineyard at hershey offered to donate the wine. The cost of a ticket was $30 dollars.
The State Police Bureau of Liquor Law Enforcement, being somewhat of a scrooge, told the sponsors if they continued with the event it would be the same as operating an illegal speakeasy if they served wine to people who paid to attend.
The borough could have applied to the LCB for a special-events permit, allowing the sale of alcohol. But getting the approval couldn't happen in two days.
But all is not lost. it's been changed to a family event 6-8 PM. S'mores and hot dogs will be served. And just announced, the singing santa will make an appearance. he will pose for pictures, sign autographs, listen to kids' Christmas lists, but not until he's entertained the crowd with song.
