The Lebanon County West Nile Program, along with the PA West Nile Program, is announcing the county’s first confirmed human case of West Nile for 2012.
The patient is a female, other information such as age or condition have not been released by the Department of Health.
Also, 5 mosquito samples collected in North Annville Township, North Lebanon Township, South Londonderry Township and Union Township were also found to be infected with West Nile virus.
The West Nile program will be conducting follow-up mosquito sampling in the areas of these WNV-positives to determine the extent of virus presence and mosquito control as needed while continuing to conduct regular surveillance and control throughout the county.
This serves as a reminder to take reasonable precautions to reduce the risk for West Nile Virus, including:
-Use of repellants when outside in the evenings. Repellants containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or soybean oil have been shown to be effective in scientific studies.
-Make sure that open windows and doors have screens.
-Vaccinate horses.
-Keep an eye out for still water that sits for more than a week: abandoned pools, storm water retention areas, tarps, buckets, tires, etc. Dump it, Drain it, Dunk it, or call your local West Nile program.
