Files, records and documents of Carlisle's embattled tax collector are being audited by the Cumberland County Controller. This action comes after tax records were found in clear plastic trash bags in his office.
George Hicks Jr. was arrested earlier this month after he sold marijuana to an undercover cop on two different occasions in one week.
A county court judge subsequently stripped him of his tax collector responsibilities.
The borough's finance department took over tax collection responsibilities. While clearing out Hicks' office, authorities found tax records in clear plastic trash bags.
Borough Council President Perry Heath says there is no indication of misuse of funds by Hicks.
"Once again it has to do with public trust and confidence,” stated Carlisle Borough Council Perry Heath. “We want the public to be aware that everything has been appropriately accounted for and since the tax collector took office and subsequent to that of the borough taking over the responsibilities. So it really has everything to do with public confidence and trust.”
Hicks retains the title of tax collector, but is barred from doing the job. He still collects a $28,000 salary.
Hicks’ future as tax collector depends on the outcome of the criminal proceedings he faces. His attorney earlier this week said Hicks might consider resigning if an agreement cab be reached with prosecutors.
