Three popular restaurants in Derry Township were destroyed last year by flash flooding and overflowing creeks as torrential rains from Tropical Storm Lee pounded the mid state. One year later all three have been rebuilt and reopened.
Derry Township officials got an uneasy feeling when mid-morning that September day they had to close the Route 322-Route 39 cloverleaf because of flooding. What happened next came as a complete surprise.
The flooding was the result of hard, steady rain, turning streets to streams and pushing creeks over their banks. As the rain continued to fall, the runoff water was starting to fill the parking lots.
However, no one expected it to get this deep this fast.
In short notice restaurant employees were forced to evacuate.
Now, the Pizza Hut, Wendy's and McDonald's are back open. The buildings are new and the latest designs of the franchises.
Another of the flood's victims was Hersheypark. Although none of the attractions was destroyed, at Zoo America, officials decided they had to humanely take the lives of two bison to prevent them from drowning in the rising flood waters.
